Rotary Club: Roxas

Years in Rotary: 6 years
Why did you decide to join Rotary?
I thought it was cool to be a Rotarian. However, after becoming one, I realized that there's much more serious stuff in the organization than what it seems. I have no regrets, though. In fact, some of the most fulfilling years of my life, are with Rotary.
What is the highest point of your service to Rotary, so far?
I consider the period of my presidency my most fulfilling in Rotary, when I was able to change the course of our club into what it is now. That certainly makes me so proud.
Who is your greatest influence, either philosophically or career-wise, and how do they influence you?
My mother, Dra. Eufenia Laserna Deslate. She was the epitome of motherhood. She loved us selflessly, and unconditionally. I really truly miss her, and I hope to be reunited with her when the day comes.
When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
To be a doctor, a farmer, a businessman. I ended up being all three, amazingly in that same order.
What is your fantasy career?
An actor. Isn't it fun to be just playing around and making all that money?
Do you have a motto? What is it?
There's a lot. But, I guess, “Do your best and God will do the rest” will stand out. It's a combination of human possibilities and, when all else fails, divine mercy and intervention. It's also a succinct manifestation of our faith.
If you were granted three wishes, what would they be?
There's only one. That our country will finally achieve peace and prosperity. That our people will finally get the good governance that they truly deserve. We are a gracious and kindred people. We deserve a much better governance than what we have now.
What aspects of serving Rotary bring you most joy?
The joy of giving to the least fortunate is indescribable. It's always a humbling experience when you see faces and gestures of gratitude from the beneficiaries of Rotary's various charities. It makes one question some of life's stark realities. Sometimes, the experiences can be disturbing, I must admit.
What changes have you seen in Rotary since you first joined?
Rotarians have become much younger than before. These young Rotarians bring with them the dynamism and idealism which is a plus for any organization. And that's exactly what's happening to Rotary right now.
What do you do for leisure (hobbies/sports)?
I used to play tennis. Lately, however, work and pleasure have become quite indistinguishable. I always keep myself busy, and I enjoy tremendously what I do. And, as the saying goes, when you enjoy what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. That answers your question?
What's your favorite holiday destination?
San Francisco, U.S.A. It's got more character and charm than its southern counterpart, a perfect blending of the east and west.
What is your favorite Book?
I used to read all the books I could get on John F. Kennedy. Lately, however, I turned to suspense bestseller stuff. Last book I read was a Ludlum.
What is your favorite Movie?
The ever immortal “The Ten Commandments”. I think it's a masterpiece.
When you have gone, for what do you want to be remembered?
That I made a difference in this transitory world.
